The McLaren F1 and Bugatti Veyron represent two completely different eras of automotive engineering, yet both earned their place among the greatest supercars ever created.

The McLaren F1 arrived in the 1990s with a revolutionary approach to performance. Powered by a naturally aspirated 6.1 litre BMW V12, it produced around 618 bhp and famously featured a central driving position. With its lightweight construction and incredible 240 mph top speed, the F1 became the benchmark for road car performance and remained the world's fastest production car for more than a decade.

Then came the Bugatti Veyron, taking the concept of outright speed to another level. Its quad turbocharged 8.0 litre W16 produced 1,001 bhp in the original Veyron, with four wheel drive and a top speed of around 253 mph. It was heavier and far more technologically complex than the F1, but delivered levels of speed and stability that seemed almost impossible for a road car.

The two icons famously went head to head on Top Gear Series 13, Episode 2, in an unforgettable one mile drag race in Abu Dhabi. Richard Hammond took the Veyron, while The Stig drove the McLaren F1. Despite the F1's incredible launch and much lighter weight, the Veyron's enormous power eventually allowed it to reel in and pass the McLaren.
